(cats) cats is an international network of multidisciplinary aphasia investigators in rehabilitation, social science, psychology and linguistics research from across 26 countries. we aim to enhance aphasia research knowledge, skills, methodologies and infrastructure. our research seeks to improve our understanding of aphasia as it relates to predictors and prognosis, intervention effectiveness and social impact and re-integration for people with aphasia. we support junior (phd candidates) and early stage researchers (within 8 years of doctoral award) in their training and development. we work to adapt and validate assessments and outcome measures into multiple languages which in turn supports multi-centered aphasia research as well as the clinical needs of non-english speaking people with aphasia and the healthcare professionals working with them. we are supported by the tavistock trust for aphasia. we are delighted to report that we have received extended support for the cats international network from the tavistock trust for aphasia until april 2020. this additional 3 years of funding will enable cats to enhance and make further gains in aphasia research to be realised assessment can be undertaken using a vast range of published tools. these assessment tools aim to capture a range of different aspects of communication including spoken language, comprehension of spoken language, reading and writing. assessment tools vary between scientific disciplines and between languages across european countries. this working group will facilitate the use of accurate, validated and reliable assessment and outcome measures across aphasia trials. planned activities include the translations of aphasia assessment tools onto different european languages to enable use across multicentre, international aphasia trials. prognosis and predictors of recovery there is limited understanding of the degree of natural recovery from aphasia following stroke. there is some suggestion that education, cognition and age may play a role. there is uncertainty about which individuals are likely to respond well to rehabilitation. combining pre-existing datasets would permit investigation and analyses of these issues. this working group examines how prognostic variables impact on the recovery and successful rehabilitation of people with aphasia . effectiveness of interventions cost effective aphasia treatment and rehabilitation could arise from a greater understanding of the components of effective aphasia rehabilitation. for some individuals the timing of rehabilitation interventions may also be an important factor. early intervention is thought to offer benefit to stroke related motor deficits yet there is no evidence whether early aphasia interventions offer more benefit than delayed intervention. through the analyses of combined datasets this working group is working to identify the components of effective aphasia rehabilitation programmes. societal impact and reintegration aphasia rehabilitation aims to maximise a person’s functional communication, thereby facilitating their re-integration into their family and community circles. however, there is uncertainty about the degree to which any particular aphasia rehabilitation programme supports reintegration into society. there are few assessment tools or outcome measures that attempt to capture this aspect of impact. many are language and even regionally specific. functional communication may vary considerably between individuals, context and language. this working group will co-ordinate a consensus activity to establish the optimum approach to capturing these important outcomes of aphasia rehabilitation. latest news cats general assembly satellite event at iarc
